It has long been said that "handouts" are not the answer and we agree.
It is far better for a player to have to come through a real pressure
situation to gain funding. What's more it is far better for all players
to have a chance at such funding.
The 2008 PRO-5000 tournament is open to players rated between 4.1 and
10.2 and provides a chance for all players to earn their own funding.
The PRO-5000 event does just this by giving the players the opportunity
to play in a GBTG run tournament which allows them the opportunity to
win significant grants to help with their future tennis expenses. The
PRO-5000 has a minimum purse of £5000.
Support for the PRO-5000
"You never know where and when a future champion has a breakthrough.
And this kind of an event just might be the leg up a girl needs - all
she needs is the opportunity. And if I can help foster that opportunity
then its a win-win all around."
Martina Navratilova on why she's getting involved
"I know from visiting schools in my constituency what a difference decent
sports facilities make and what a positive reaction there is from girls
who get the chance to play competitive sport. Tennis in particular has the
potential to be easily accessible and popular all year round. That's
why I'm backing GB Tennis Girls in their important initiative."
Angela Smith MP
"What women's tennis needs in our country is exposure, promotion, equal
opportunities and tough competition. Pro 5000 and GBTG are achieving just
that and I am looking forward to working with them to build our future for
women's tennis."
