Strange tournament in that at the start of it I thought the lower ranked girls stood a chance of winning a round or two and getting some valuable points and that our top ranked players would hit the Yakimova's and Mirza's that would prevent them making the final stages but seems to be the other way round! Draw's pretty open and there's now a reasonable chance for Katie and Laura to progress.
Katie hasn't been overly impressive but maybe this is what she needs, a tournament where she grinds out results and gets back in the habit of winning. Will be intrigued to see the result against Anna who previously I had always thought a bit lightweight but after seeing her at Wimbledon reminds me exactly of a Katie prototype! She's compact, strong off the ground and fast, good off both wings, can slice and mix things up, serve is the weakness. Seeing her play I thought there was no reason why if Katie has achieved what she has that Anna couldn't do the same given the similarity of their games. She seems to be believing that and must fancy her chances here.
Laura's looked impressive and should beat Babos. Mirza's got a much weaker serve so Babos won't have the opportunities to attack that part of Laura's game. |
